What’s My Window of Opportunity?

Some of my medications have to be taken before meals. The directions on the label are very specific, take “30 minutes before meal.” This drove me nuts.

But one simple question to my doctor put an end to this madness.

Some of my medications have to be taken before meals. The directions on the label are very specific, take “30 minutes before meal.” This drove me nuts.

In trying to take my medicine properly I’d delay eating. Or I’d gamble on how long before dinner was going to hit the table.

Eating out was a particular nightmare. There’s no predicting how long it will take to get seated. And after that who knows how fast or slow service will be? When I asked the server for something to eat with my pill, inevitably I would get the (white) bread basket. A single roll could be half the carbs allotted to the meal! Continue reading “What’s My Window of Opportunity?”

Out of sight, out of mind.

I’m a sucker for a juicy burger. After seeing Adam Richman blink his big brown eyes at the camera, then take a big bite out of the totally ridiculous mountain of ground beef he’s challenging on Man vs. Food all I can think about is eating a burger myself.

There are whole cable television networks dedicated to celebrating the lucious look and sound of food. The Food NetworkCooking Channel. They’ll keep you salivating 24 hours a day.

Good Ideas: Apply the Goldilocks Principle

Not too much. Not too little. But just right.
Just like the fairy tale I try to find that balance point.

Not too much. Not too little. But just right.

Just like in the fairy tale I try to find that balance point.

Eat too much and I feel bloated and my blood sugar goes up too much. Eat too little and I feel sluggish and my metabolism slows down. Eat just right amount and I am energized and my body is nourished.

Exercise too much and I feel sore and discouraged. Exercise too little and I don’t feel any improvement in my body. Exercise just right amount and I am energized and my body is strengthened.

You get the idea. Continue reading “Good Ideas: Apply the Goldilocks Principle”

What’s to eat?

What’s to eat? When you have diabetes that’s a loaded question.

cc Gisela Francisco

When you have diabetes that’s a loaded question.

What I eat, when I eat and how much I eat all affects my blood sugar. And controlling my blood sugar is my number one priority when it comes to managing diabetes.

How do I figure out what’s “best” to eat?

Do I pay attention to food groups? Count grams of carbohydrates? Count calories? Track glycemic indexes? Track vitamins and minerals? Eat goodcarbs? Don’t eat badcarbs? It’s all so overwhelming and enough to make me want to run from the room screaming. Continue reading “What’s to eat?”
